Jonge Gopherus polyphemus groeien gemiddeld 3 tot 5 cm per jaar. Ze zijn erg kwetsbaar voor lange tijd omdat hun schild vrij lang zacht blijft. Deze periode vallen er veel slachtoffers door roofdieren zoals de wasbeer. Pas na 10 tot zelfs 20 jaar zijn Gopherus polyphemus op een leeftijd waarbij ze zich voortplanten.
