Gopherus polyphemus kan zeer oud worden, schattingen van dieren in het wild bedragen 50-70 jaar. In gevangenschap meer dan 100 jaar. Verspreidings gebied is van Zuid/Oost South Carolina Zuid/Oost Louisiana en in alle 67 staten van Florida. Gopherus polyphemus heeft buiten Florida de status "'Federally Protected Threatend Specie"" en in Florida de status "' Species of Special Consern"" Bedreigingen en achteruitgang van populatie's Gopherus polyphemus worden voornamelijk veroorzaakt door verlies van natuurlijk habitat door de mens die steeds meer land nodig heeft in Florida voor landbouw en huizenbouw.
