Redlist 2 fotolijst

Door verschillende oorzaken zijn deze schildpadden op de Redlijst 2 van bedreigde schildpadden soorten gekomen, de 3 belangrijkste zijn habitat verlies, voedselmarkt
en de huisdiermarkt.
In dit voorwoord van de Red 2 fotolijst behandelen we kort het grote en uitgebreide probleem van de voedselmarkt.

De handel naar en op Zuid/Oost Azie (speciaal Chinese) voedselmarkten is een belangrijke bedreiging voor het voortbestaan van Zuid/Oost Aziatische schildpadden in het wild.
Hoewel schildpadden al eeuwen worden gegeten door de mens, zijn recente veranderingen in de Aziatische economie, waardoor meer geld aan voedsel besteed kan worden direct het probleem.
Dat behalve meer Zuid/Oost Aziatische schildpadden nu ook schildpadden uit allerlei landen geimporteerd worden om als voedsel gebruikt te worden is omdat in hun eigen land vele populaties schildpadden in het wild (praktisch) zijn opgegeten.
De grote vraag naar schildpadden vlees waar veel geld in omgaat is nu te merken in allerlei landen, de meeste met gebrekkige wetgeving op gebied van handel in schildpadden.
Schildpadden zijn een favoriet voedselmiddel in Zuid/Oost Azie voor de status die het eten van dit vlees daar met zich meebrengt en het bijgeloof dat het eten van schildpaddenvlees een medicinale werking zou hebben.
Steeds breder wordt de cirkel waar de handelaren op de voedselmarkten de schildpadden vandaan halen, naast Bangladesh, Pakistan India en Nepal worden schildpadden nu ook uit New Guinea en zelfs Amerika geimporteerd om opgegeten te worden.
Gevolgen hiervan zijn groot.
Sinds 1970 is de vraag naar schildpaddenvlees alleen maar gestegen, ongeveer het tienvoudige vergeleken met cijfers van voor 1970.
Deze vraag naar schildpaddenvlees is direkt verantwoordelijk voor het uitsterven van soorten in het wild, speciaal in de (armere) landen waar ze niet of niet afdoende beschermd worden.
Hierbij komt dan nog de illegale handel in schildpadden voor hun vlees.
Schattingen berekend op tellingen van waarnemers op de Chinese voedselmarkten doen geloven dat de voedselmarkten alleen al in China 12 miljoen schildpadden verhandelen per jaar om opgegeten te worden (Salzberg 1998)
Dit cijfer zal alleen maar groeien met de toenemende bevolking.
Vijfentwintig procent van het aantal soorten wereld wijd worden gegeten/verhandeld op de voedselmarkten en dus direkt bedreigt, maar een klein percentage is hiervoor "'gekweekt"' het overgrote deel is wildvang waarmee populatie's in de natuur grote schade oplopen soms zelfs verwoest worden.
