KGMB (Honolulu, Hawaii) 15 May 08 Turtles Cause Sewage Spill Report on Maui
Reports of a big sewage spill on Maui, turned out to be something very different.
Maui police received calls just before 10 this morning, from someone who saw what they thought was sewage along the shore near Haycraft Park, stretching for about a mile south along Sugar Beach.
Department of Health inspectors found, it was actually turtle waste. The DOH says the calm weather may have caused it.
"With the calm tides and Kona winds, we can expect to see this occur more often," said DOH District Health Officer Dr. Lorrin Pang in a statement. "The area becomes like a large lagoon, and the waste that is normally washed out with the waves settles along the edges."
There is no public health threat. The beaches remained open.
